Taking the TOEFL...

What is the TOEFL?

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is the most widely used English proficiency test, accepted by more than 9 000 colleges, universities and agencies in more than 130 countries. TOEFL iBT is the internet-based version of the test, which has become the most common way to take the exam. TOEFL iBT measures students' ability to use and understand English at the university level. It assesses how students combine listening, reading, speaking and writing skills to perform English tasks.

Who should take the TOEFL?

Students who come from countries where English is not the primary language should take the TOEFL. Some universities do not require students who are completing their IB program in English, or those who have attended high school in English for three or more years to submit their TOEFL scores. However, as most students are not compeltely sure where they want to apply until their senior year, taking the TOEFL will help keep their options open.

What is considered a good TOEFL score?

TOEFL iBT scores are reported on a scale of 0 to 120 (with 30 being the maximum score on each section). There is no passing or failing score, and inividual universities determine their own score requirements. Most universities require a minimum score of 80.
